Scoliosis Research & Studies
Research is ongoing to determine the cause for idiopathic scoliosis. Current areas of study include genetics (heredity), growth patterns, and cellular changes in the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, central nervous system (e.g., brain, spinal cord), muscles, and nerves.
Researchers are developing new treatment options (e.g., braces, surgical procedures) to help straighten the spine and prevent scoliosis from worsening. Long-term effects of spinal fusion surgery and of allowing scoliosis to remain untreated also are being studied.
