Prognosis for Children with Diabetes
Children with diabetes can do just about anything non-diabetic children can dothey can participate in group activities, play sports, take trips, and enjoy holidaysbut they must manage their blood sugar. Monitoring blood glucose levels, eating properly, exercising regularly, and taking medications or insulin as directed can help reduce the risk for developing long-term complications.
Diabetes Prevention
Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented. Some studies suggest that the risk for developing this type of diabetes can be lowered by breastfeeding and by not giving babies solid foods too early; however, these theories need further research. The risk for type 2 diabetes can be lowered through healthy weight management.
