With appropriate medical attention, the prognosis for croup is very good. Most cases of viral croup begin to improve in 3–7 days. In rare cases when croup is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotic medication generally leads to a full recovery.

However, croup that develops into tracheitis or epiglottitis and causes an obstruction in the airway can be life threatening.
