ADHD and Adolescence
Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder face a number of challenges at any age; however, challenges during adolescence may be especially difficult. Common teen issues, such as low self-esteem, fear of failure, peer pressure, and problems handling additional responsibilities and independence, often are very difficult for teenagers with ADHD. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder increases the risk for alcohol and drug use, sexual activity, and automobile accidents in adolescents.
It is important for parents of teens who have ADHD to provide clear, easy-to-understand rules and handle inappropriate behavior accordingly. Good communication (e.g., between parents and adolescents and between parents and school officials) also is very important.
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder presents several difficult challenges for children and adolescents and for their families. However, through perseverance, understanding, and effective treatments, these challenges can be overcome.
